Khaled Meshaal, Hamas’ political leader, announced a message to the next Israeli government: Hamas will talk if Israel meets conditions that include a withdrawal to the boundaries that Israel had until the 1967 Middle East war. He is suggested an openness to “a long-term truce with Israel.”
At the same time, he suggested Hamas was capable of leading the Palestinians in a long-term struggle against Israel.
Nevertheless, this is an important step towards suggesting a more reconciliatory position. Do not be surprised if overtures towards negotiations are matched by more belligerant comments, as well. Such is classic politician-talk. They have to talk out of both sides to keep everyone happy.
My guess is that Hamas knows Israel will not accept those terms. They just spent years and billions building the Apartheid wall to annex half the West Bank. They won’t be giving up what they took for some lousy long-term truce — or even peace probably.
