Don’t Mess With Arabiyyat

KABOBfest is the first Arab blog to break this story of national import.

NBA player Jason Kidd of the New Jersey Nets and Arab-American hottie Joumana Kidd are getting divorced after 10 years. Despite their rocky past, including bouts of misogyny, they at times seemed really happy. Jason Kidd is calling Joumana, according to the AP, “a vitriolic, jealous and paranoid wife prone to public outbursts and threats, including during a recent Nets game.”

In her Arabic speeches, she called him an “ibn sharmouta,” which translates loosely to “a jerk.” In English, she gave another message to manipulate western audiences into thinking she is a peacemaker.

Though I could find no independent web sources to verify that Joumana Kidd is Arab, my friend who worked with her Mom at a department store in the Bay Area can verify it. Seriously. Plus, as we all know, Joumana is an Arabic name meaning “pearl.” I have a cousin named Joumana (award me two cookies).

KF sends its condolences to the Kidds and apologizes to its readers for any observable bad taste, irrelevance, or cheap attempts at humor.

  3. Anonymous – many Arab Christians have what you call “American names” because they’re named after biblical characters.

If you had any sense of history, however, you’d realize that names like Paul, Peter, Chris, Mike, John, Joe, etc… are derived from Arabic and Hebrew names – and are therefore not derived from “American” (or as we educated people like to call it – English) at all.

These English names are taken from the Semitic languages.

    Boom-shakalaka! Boos TZ.

  4. Hehe, American names… that is funny.

    I speak American…

Unless your name is Standing Bull or Black Hawk, or something like it, you don’t have an American name….

  5. Hi Nadeem ,
You are right , these English names are taken from semitic languages , so instead of John they can use you7ana ,Peter=bo6ros,and so on.
so please don’t try to deny that most of Arabic christians gave up their Arabic identity , because they think Arabism=Islam.

    P.S:
I’m glad you carry an Arabic name Nadeem.

  7. If I recall correctly from my aunt’s translations of my uncle’s more thundrous imprecations, “ibn sharmouta” turns into “son of a whore” in English. Is this right?

  9. Guys,

My translation of “ibn sharmouta” was my sad attempt at a JOKE. It was supposed to be a sarcastic, exaggerated understatement.

I guess it only is that way if you grow up getting smacked for saying it. Them was fighting words in Michigan.
