Bravo to the Arab authoritarian regimes and tyrannies for their measures against the dangerous threat known as bloggers. It is about time. These bloggers threaten our glorious Arab regimes with their electronic words and dangerous ideas, such as the crazy notion that they should be able to speak their minds.
And, how dare these tools of western imperialism insult Islam?! The 22 year-old blogger Abdelkareem Nabil Soliman is in an Egyptian prison, rightfully, for daring to suggest that women and religious minorities should be treated equally and challenging the religious extremists who are always right about everything. What next? Is he going to suggest the earth is round?!
I am glad about this because Allah can rest knowing that Mubarak, the Ikhwan and others are watching for Him.
Syria should go after Yassar Fattoom, the Syrian student who dared to point out:
"Here we have one party ruling the whole country. Anybody else is not allowed," he said. "You can't say anything. In Egypt you can find demos against regime, for raising salaries...you feel that everything is real. Here everything is behind mask."His crime, you ask? Saying what everyone knows. The Syrian parliament should ban stating the obvious. That would give them the perfect quasi-legal basis for arresting and detaining every little troublemaker.
My hats off to these brave governments for really taking on the true enemies of the Arab people -- bloggers. These computer geeks who think they can say whatever they want have Arab blood on their hands. This misuse of the internet for the free exchange of ideas is a crime against humanity that must stop before it brings down the entire Arab world and God with it.

Isn't it weird that Egypt can take a lesson or two about freedom of speech from Hamas' PA? In Palestine, no one is arrested for blogging... and Palestinians criticize their government non-stop.
Funny post! I suggest we start the anti-blogging blog campaign!
"In Palestine, no one is arrested for blogging... and Palestinians criticize their government non-stop."
Unless they are gay or like Jews. Then they are branded as collaborators, gutted an hung from lightpoles.
For those who have hookups with the so-called `ulama' ... since it is the religious establishment in Egypt that is pushing for this crazy trial, will somebody PLEASE write a coherent argument against what those authorities are claiming is or is not "un-Islamic"? I mean, come on, it is relevant to you.
Bro the examples you bring are indicative that your views are shaped by the American "left" media which I think could be dangerous.
The state of Egypt, ally of the US, is rarely portrayed as an oppressive regime in the US press. Nonetheless, it is one of the most authoritarian and very aggressively anti-bloggers. There are MANY cases of the state cracking down on bloggers in Egypt by tracking them, beating them or even throwing them in prison, check Egyptian human rights organizations. However you point to an example in which the state, ally of US, is not involved.
On the other hand, Syria, not an ally of the US, is portrayed in the US media as an excessively authoritarian regime, yet bloggers in Syria are less subject to state scurtiny than Egypt. I personally only know two or three cases of people getting in trouble to emailing certain things online. My point is, you should bring examples from states that are pro-US in the region (basically all except Syria and maybe Libya), otherwise you are stating the obvious.
I fully support cutting off aid to Egypt.
Kareem has been handed a 4 year jail sentence. It's disgusting. His real crime is insulting Mubarak. The Islam part is frills for distraction (tamweeh). Egypt, Syria, Saudi Arabia , Libya (just to name a few) are authoritarian regimes. We don't need the American left media to tell us that. And let's not start prettifying Syria because it's out of US favor these days. They all suck. If we want to have any legitimacy talking about freedom and reform, then we must talk about them all.
Amen Amal.
Pro-US, Anti-US, they all just want to stay in power at the people's expense.
Will
I see your point but I have to disagree! Syria is prgamatic and they are far from being close to the US let alone allied (like sellouts Egypt, Saudi, Jordan, Hariri Inc and many others). The Israeli press reported that when the Israelis talked to the US about resuming negotiations with Syria, Condi told the Israelis "dont even think about it."
Also, I think it is very important to distingush between anti-US regimes (Syria and Iran) and pro-US regimes (all the others) because in actuality the pro-US regimes are bigger violators of human rights. i am not "prettifying" Syria, but whehter you like it or not it is the last Arab country left in confrontation to the US and Israel, for me that is enough for it to be just a little bit more excused in its authoritarian nature. You should focus on
I am against western politicization of human rights and I dont not agree with notions of absolutism.
And Will, which government in the world doesnt "want to stay in power at the people's expnse"? Sweden? While there needs to be more done about the lack of freedom in ALL Arab countries, I think it is unfair what the western press does, uglyfies Syria and prettifies Saudi, Egypt and Jordan. Dont fall in that trap.
