While the United States administration and public opinion in general have still shown no semblance of understanding of the basic inequity underlying Israel's long-standing dispossession and occupation of the Palestinian people, some of our allies in Europe seem to get it. Grassroots movements, unions, and academics are increasingly holding the occupiers responsible for the problems of occupation.
The American position of blaming the colonized has only amounted to failure. It has rewarded Israeli aggression and human rights violations, propped up corrupt Palestinian rule, and as a result, only made things worse. The grassroots European vision, which follows the example of apartheid South Africa, is the only real peace movement in the world today. It is based on a much more effective model, than is the American way of supporting those in power -- an age-old strategy for more tragedy. There cannot be peace with equality and justice. Duh!
From the ICTU's press statement:
The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) -- representing trade unions and trades councils from the whole island of Ireland -- have today passed two motions on Palestine that are extremely critical of the actions of the Israeli government in its oppression of the Palestinian people.
The two motions condemn Israel for its human rights abuses, its policy of ethnic cleansing and its war crimes. The motions have been proposed by Belfast Trades Council and by Derry Trades Council. Both motions go into considerable detail about the suffering endured byt he Palestinian people under Israeli occupation. Conference also criticizes the British and Irish governments and the European Union for the failed policy of "constructive engagement."
It characterizes EU policy as one of as "appeasement," and in particular criticises the EU for failing to end the preferential trading status granted to Israel under the Euro-Mediterranean Association Agreement -- as it is formally obligated to do under the human rights clause in Article 2 of that agreement.

I am a Lebanese christian. My family was mutilated by Palestinian terrorists in the civil war of 1976. They ripped out the testicles of my relatives and stuck them in the mouths of the mutilated corpses. Any drunken Irish group that supports the Palestinians deserves to go to hell.
Drunken Irishmen supporting bloodthirsty Palestinian Arabs. what a hoot!
Elias and Harry,
If the two of you are truly Lebanese, and not some punks pretending to be Lebanese, then I have two words for you: Sabra-Shatila.
Nidalio...
I second that. These are just some little busters talking trash.
These are just some little busters talking trash.
That pretty much describes the whole Kabobfest staff.
Roy-
nice try cocksucker. little busters talking trash is referring to tea baggers like yourself. Now go fuck yourself. Oh yeah, your mother's a prostitute.
Wow pali-American. Way to set an example for your people with that foul mouth and attitude. Of course, what can you expect from supporters of murderers like Hamas?
I really wonder everyday, what benefit the US has by letting in such sedicious and hateful people like yourselves.
Forget about filthy insults for just a moment.
Doesn't it seem crooked to you that of all the murderous regimes in the world in general and the Muslim middle eastern states in particular, such as Iran, Syria or Saudi Arabia to mention a few, these organizations single out Israel for boycott...???
Ridiculous. When Palestinians express themselves to any international, that is western audience, they try to paint a reality that is completely one sided: An evil Israel brutally victimizing poor innocent Palestinians. How credible is that? Why not mention decades of murderous attacks against Israeli civilians, hundreds of suicide bombers, a Palestinian authority complicit and supportive of terrorist organizations within its boundaries, daily rocket attacks from Gaza even though Israel withdrew 100% from Gaza just to give peace a chance. I could go on and on, but my one advice to Palestinians who's basic right for self determination is one I support: Open your society up for dialogue. Tell the true story. fight the extremists within your own society. Peace is possible, but not at the expense of Israel's existence. Give peace a chance and it will happen.
