Are Arab-Americans Cool?

Heeb Magazine took on this question in the latest issue. It cited the rise of Arab-American comedians, the popularity of the keffiyeh, a new rock group named "Beirut" and other trends. It is an interesting read for, and has excellent quotes from KABOBer May.

I personally think we're cool because we're vilified by so many uncool stiffs in government, academia, and media. I guess I could say so much more about this but given how bad things are in the Arab world at the hands of occupiers and imperial forces, I'd rather sulk in the corner than demonstrate how cool I am.

Will, you aren't an Arab. Give it a rest. And the keffiya is "cool" with anarchists, who are the most "uncool" people in the whole world. Think about it... anarchists are anti-social nerds. They (you?) like Palestinians so much because Palestinians are nearly as unpopular as they are, eh?

CSS, you really should avoid saying the same things as "anonymous" and various made up names that you have recently said as "Catholic Sunni Shia" other places. It makes your use of sock-puppet virtual buddies to agree with yourself WAY too obvious :P

CSS,

I just googled Programmer Craig--he's on 99% of ALL Arab blogs. ALL of them.

That must have been a deliberate lie on your part, since I am obviously not on YOUR blog :O

It's funny, a year ago I had people telling me "Why don't you go back to your right wing American blogs!" and "Go back to little green footballs" - even though I don't even read American blogs, and never have. Now, I get people complaining that I'm on "all the Arab blogs" - let me ask you, CSS, why do you (and other Arab bloggers) blog in ENglish, if you don't wnat to hear from people who speak English as their native tongue? Hmmm? I know you (CSS) only want to hear from self-loathing leftists, but guess what? Leftists are like 3% of the US population. Anarchists are 1% (if that) of the population. Blog in English, you'll hear from the other 95% of Americans. If you don't like that, then don't fucking blog in English. OK? Is it that hard to figure out?

And in closing, I have never yet been asked to stop commenting on a blog. Not once. I have "fired" a half dozen blogs that I decided I really didn't want to participate on anymore. So, bottom line, if teh KABOOMfesters don't want me to comment here, all they gotta do is ask and I'll be gone. Otherwise, kindly shut the fuck up about "waaa waaa waaaa why do you keep commenting here waaa waaa waaaa".

You sound like a bunch of fucking punks who like to talk shit but can't stand it when anyone talks shit back to you.

Can one of the KABOBers sum up the above post with a :) or a :( for me?

Generally speaking not every partisan’s comments or response make sense or sometimes their point is not manifested. Why commentators want Craig out of here? It is true that he does not agree with many of our ideologies and a lot of times he is not directly pointing to the discussed subject but he is spending a lot of time responding to a lot of comments and that is strategically valuable. Sometimes I read this blog because I want to see what he has to say and how will he argue back with his specific line of attack. If you do not agree with him, try to argue back and be persistence as much as he is. A true and good blog like here should allow different opinions of any sort and usually via multi-dimensional responses, the true nature of the unbiased news will formulate. Additionally, commentators help moderate the blog by responding and giving different opinions. Craig is well organized and systematic in his responses and he gives personal attention (good/or bad and unfortunately often rude) to every respondent. Even though his political or social thoughts might not align with your ideas or he is not as respectful as he could, he keeps the blog active and heats up the discussion. My advice to Craig is respect other commentators. I know it is not my place to tell others what to do though. When an individual personally attacks other commentator’s responses, it indicates that he/she is politically and ideologically threatened and does not have another way to defend his/her ideas. You can either raise your voice and discuss issues with each other or just exit the argument. Taking each other out of the picture does not solve problem and we all know that ;) Give respect and get respect.

Arezou, thanks.

My advice to Craig is respect other commentators.

Give respect and get respect.

I've actually found that trying to be polite and respectful to people who are being abusive on blogs just encourages them to continue with their behavior. It doesn't encourage them to be respectful in return.

I don't generally make personal attacks on people unless they have made personal attacks on me first.

I make exceptions for people like Catholic Sunni Shia, because she is a blatant racist and hatemonger and I've never seen her say anything, anywhere, that wasn't advocating hate against somebody... and you know who that "somebody" is. Virtually all of what she easy is hate speech as far as I'm concerned, and I don't feel any moral obligation to either ignore or "respect" people like her.

As far as this blog is concerned, maybe I should consider changing my tone, or not reading this blog any more. Most of the bloggers here seem to be trying to tone down the over-the-top and dishonest commentary that used to be so prevalent, here.

Criag,
If you dictate a plan or a system, no one will listen to you. I read couple of your comments on other Arab and non-Arab blogs. I can tell you are educated and you are eager to learn and educated others and also capable of having an intellectual conversation without insulting anyone. In some of them you were learning and in some of them you were expanding other’s sphere of knowledge. As you mentioned earlier, changing your tone sounds like a great idea and I am sure you will see a different reaction from everyone. This will reduce the level of unnecessary stress of different commentators and yours with different interests. I like your comments when you are direct to the point and responding to the article. I may never agree with you but I will understand where you are coming from and under what basis you are trying to make a point. If you think they do not know much, tell them why they need to further educated themselves on it and since offering valid information will strengthen your argument, provide them the information you already have. Finding the right method to converse and argue intellectually with an educated crowd that does not agree with you is an art itself. Dear Craig, I think that your current method of argument is failing and backfiring. Remember that you are mostly offering an opposing viewpoint here and others may never agree with you no matter how objective you might be and some issues are strictly subjective and human beings might never change their opinion throughout life unless they make that decision themselves. However, you are able to force others to have a respectful argument with you when you change your mode of disclosing information and the method you chose to converse. I personally think making exceptions in behavioral treatment (as far as what you mentioned earlier) initiates currents problems but you can decide on what route to take. Try to be the better one ;) When it comes down to politics, social issues, and history you can be more influential if you change your tone, your approach, and providing solid accurate facts that is strongly supported (peer reviewed articles, or issues that have been cited by researchers) globally. I know you know it all but this is just a friendly reminder. I think this quotes applies to all of us ;) “Self-empowerment - that's learning to respect other people's music, but dance to your own tune as you master harmony within yourself” Doc Childre.
Good luck,
Arezou
