Hey Ladies! (World’s Most Powerful 100 Women)

In yet another top whatever list, Forbes has rolled out their Word’s 100 Most Powerful Women. The list is quite interesting and has human rights activists from Afghanistan and a pair of business titans from Turkey. The Arab world was somewhat well represented:

#72 Maha al Ghunaim (Kuwait)
#79 Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser al Missned (Qatar)
#82 Queen Rania (Jordan)
#99 Sheikha Lubna al Qasimi (UAE)

For starters I have never understood the media’s infatuation with Queen Rania. Other despot’s wives have started social programs and she is not as attractive as Asma al Assad or even Sheikha Mozah (suck on that Palestine/Jordan!!). I guess it is harder for Asma to get on Oprah.

That being said the other three women are all dynamos who are really shaking things up (and all from the Gulf too). Of course they owe their position at least in part to good old fashioned wasta (connections), but they are becoming icons for their achievements and challenging the status quo. I really believe that the subtle changes and innovations introduced by Sheikha Mozah are going to be seen as very significant when we look back 20 years from now.

I was kind of shocked that Meridith Vieira made the list (at #55 no less!). What other women in the Middle East would you add to this list? Are there really no N. African or E. Mediterranean women who could be included (Queen Rania aside)?

  3. How you can say that Asma al Assad is better looking then Rania is beyond me..sure Queen Rania has her off days, but when you consider that she is almost 40 and way past her prime, you begin to realise that she’s not doing badly at all…

Unlike the Sheikha Mozah who you also say looks better, Queen rania has not had a complete plastic makeover!

If you could just break free of your hate for the Palestinians then perhaps you would start to say something all together more convincing.
