Wouldn’t it be nice, the Americans thought, if young Afghans could be encouraged to play football instead of getting up to mischief. So they got a helicopter and dropped a load of balls over Khost province.
Next thing they knew, angry residents were protesting in the streets of Khost. Unfortunately the gaily-coloured balls were decorated with flags from around the world and one of the flags was that of Saudi Arabia which incorporates the Muslim declaration of faith: “There is no god but God, Muhammad is the messenger of God.”
Explaining the protests, Afghan MP Mirwais Yasini told the BBC: “To have a verse of the Qur’an on something you kick with your foot would be an insult in any Muslim country around the world.”
Clearly the US Army dropped the ball (get it? ball!) on this one, but Saudi gets way too much self-righteous mileage out of their flag. However, if you thought this was a two horse race for who was the stupidest, the Brits are pulling ahead on the outside! From the comments section of the above article:
If the Americans played proper football rather than their own strange version of special-needs rugby, they’d have heard about the World Cup brouhaha and would have been more circumspect. (The footballs, presumably, were a FIFA job lot that had been left in the warehouse for five years after that embarrassment.)Of course, if the Americans played cricket instead of steroid-enhanced rounders, the world would simply be a better and more civilised place.
I hope the US invasion force is on its way. If you want to discuss the merits of soccer/futbol that is one thing, but cricket and rugby? Okay, I admit it. The comment was funny in that dry Brit-humor sort of way. Let’s bomb them anyways.

I suppose when you give soccer balls to Afghans, they just have to kick them. no matter how offended they get by their own actions, right? Probably some American GIs accompanied the balls and forced Afghan kids to actually use the them?
