Do I smell shenanigans?

In one week four underwater internet cables in the Middle East have been cut or damaged. These are the backbone of the modern internet and phone systems and by most reports none of this was done by an errant ship anchor. Several countries have been hit by a reduction in capacity, including Egypt, Yemen, UAE and India, with Iran seeing the most dramatic reduction. It seems odd that so many of this cables would go down at the same time, but the question is, why?

The internets, as always full of speculation, offer a few possibilities as to why someone might cut the cables (assuming this is not a freak coincidence)...
1) Iran is about to open the first oil exchange not based on US dollars.
2) The US, in keeping with a mantra that the internet could be an enemy weapon, is continuing to tap into the network of cables.
3) The bombs are on the way. I don't like hysteria, but it don't look good when Israel is telling people to get their "rocket rooms" ready.
