This is the hottest kuffiyehspotting I’ve seen in a looooooooong time.
Click here to see images of some not-so-hot kuffiyehspottings. (The kid with the flag, the table, and the close-up of eyes excluded.)

Posted by Sarah | February 28, 2008, 7:19 amWait a minute….that’s QuiQui??!! Holy smoke!
I realize that it’s irredeemably porcine of me to even notice this spectacular woman’s loveliness, and I in no way mean to elevate her beauty over her insights and analysis (after all, I’ve looked forward to reading her very engaging posts here for months and months while having no clue about her ridiculously perfect appearance), but, damn……..
I should know better by now, but things like this continue to show me how unreconstructed a porker I remain. That I should read a woman’s posts with great pleasure and admiration and then be surprised that she’s ravishing……
My apologies to my Muslim readers for the repeated references to a certain haram barnyard creature, but I gotta call ‘em as I see ‘em.
And to QuiQui, I promise to picture Kathy Bates or Madeleine Albright when I read your stuff in the future, that my appreciation of your wit, intelligence and moral passion be unsullied by memories of your unearthly allure.
Posted by Ismail | February 28, 2008, 7:48 amWow, Ismail… what a tribute!
QuiQui, I think you have a new fan.
The last time someone waxed so poetically about the beauties of a KABOBer was when Fayyad had a secret admirer in the comments section.
Posted by Will | February 28, 2008, 8:29 amThat was waxing for Fayyad, Will, but it was not poetic. I have to say this is the most poetic language I’ve ever seen anywhere near this site. Quiqui should be proud.
Posted by Emily | February 28, 2008, 8:53 amOooo terrific job quiqui, ur not even wearing the kuffiyeh the right way. Arabs arent pirates u know!

Posted by Mohammad | February 28, 2008, 9:15 amBuydatti, ya hmar!
There is no “right way” to wear it. There are conventional ways, and QuiQui is free to do her own thang, cuz she runs this shit, baby.
Stop hating because QuiQui shot your sorry ass down.

Posted by Will | February 28, 2008, 12:25 pmIm glad to see qui qui saying westerners wearing keffiyah is a sign of solidarity. But dont you guys actually mock them on this blog?
Im confused.
Posted by nev | February 28, 2008, 12:58 pmwow…now i have another reason to read your blogs besides your wit
call me ….lol

This is something many are actually torn about. On the one hand, it’s painful and frustrating to see the kuffiyah commodified in such a way that it dilutes the political symbolism many of the bloggers on this site have grown up with knowing as part of their identities.
On the other, that folks who know almost nothing about the Palestinian struggle are wearing it in such large numbers offers at least a couple of unique opportunities.
For one, through its current transformations it sets up the chance for a rearticulation — one away from the negative connotations as “terrorist scarf” prevalent in the U.S.
But more importantly, that the scarf has become such an item of interest to people who wouldn’t normally engage in anything that has to do with Palestine allows many of us the chance to push the mainstream into real dialogue about Palestine and the Arab World.
Meanings are always produced and contested, and as an activist-bloggers, many of us see this as a unique opportunity to use the scarf as a microcosm for political, historical, cultural and economic discourses in and about the Middle East.
Posted by QuiQui | February 28, 2008, 3:01 pmas i posted earlier, i was at the mall the other day with my boyfriend, and i saw some hipster girl in an upscale clothing store wearing a kaffiyah around her neck. she had NO idea what it represented either. grrr!!
so then, i went to ruehl, and one of the mannequins was wearing.. you guessed it, a kaffiyah.
looks like they’re the “hot” item for spring.
Posted by ally | February 28, 2008, 3:57 pmone away from the negative connotations as “terrorist scarf” prevalent in the U.S.
It seems to me that since this blog is pro-terrorism, and this blog promotes wearing the dish towel as a display of solidarity with “Arabs” that this blog is reinforcing the stereotypical viewpoint that the dish towel is a “terrorist scarf”, no?
That’s the way I view it, anyway. And please give me a break about “anti-war protests”. You fuckers are not “anti-war” – you just want the Palestinian terrorists to win, instead of all the losing they’ve been doing the last 60 years.
Posted by programmer craig | February 28, 2008, 5:31 pmQuiQui, I’m proud of you!
I’m glad that you stand up for what you believe in.
P.S. You look great!!
