How Do You Say Marketplace In Arabic?

NPR/PRI’s financial program packed its suitcases and sent its staff to the Middle East to report from one of the world’s fastest growing economies for a few days. And yes, there is enough to fill a couple of weeks’ worth of programming; it is not solely oil.

Now if reading the above paragraph gave you a knot in your stomach, or slightly bothered you, then you are probably a Zionist or some other form of racist, and you should get yourself checked by a medical professional. I'm serious, you need to think about it. But perhaps you want to avoid the Cleveland Clinic, which underwrote the program's Middle East reporting, or the Harvard Medical School, which is branching off to Dubai, as listening to the program would inform you. But I digress.

A very informative set of reports, even for someone who follows the region as closely as my self. And they donned the website with a banner that displayed the show’s name in Arabic. Much of the reporting of the last few days has come from Cairo and Dubai.

It is not all booming business, however, Marketplace team took a detour to Palestine and prepared a 3-part business report from Palestine. The first aired last Thursday, and focused on the difficulty of doing business under occupation in Palestine. The second aired to day, talking about “Olive Oil Diplomacy” and featuring the Palestine Fair Trade Association’s co-op of olive farmers.

Another of the cool reports was one on Islam and sustainability, Islam as a green idea, though I would not infer a reason for why Hamas’ flag is colored as such.

thanks for the links. You can't get NPR where I live unless you hold the antennae on the balcony while standing on one foot. Rush comes through loud and clear, though....

Anyway, good series. Very interesting.

I'm sorry safiyyah. I lived in the sticks once. Then I made it a rule, if a town does not have a clear NPR station, then it's to remote for me.

Marketplace is program produced by American Public Media, a Minneapolis liberal organization which supports pro-Palestinian Arab terrorists and the destruction of the State of Israel.

God Bless the State of Israel and the IDF. The IDF will destroy Hamas and all Arab terrorists.

Too bad the only people who listen to NPR are hippies and leftists :O

Wait... hippies are leftists. Nevermind.

Why do you guys listen to NPR? You don't think you are LEFTISTS, do you? Or is it just the American self-loathing that appeals to you?

Don't worry, I stayed up really late translating this one. It was the most challenging one yet. Read the full "boater translation" at KABOBfestWATCH!

fyi, someone can be a zionist and not be bothered in the slightest by the first paragraph.

Perhaps YOU shoudln't be so closed minded.

Sorry Fayyad, but "Zionists" want progress in the Arab world.

That fact that things are so backwards in the Middle East allowing the governments to hold their people hostage with a single-minded ideology and distract them from their own real problems is something that's been a thorn in the side of Israel for a long time.

Israel would love the Dubai-ization of the Middle East. They just don't want the Saudi-ization or Iran-ization. But since neither represents progress by any stretch, Israel will take fast growing economies in the neighborhood any day of the week.

It's Arab governments, kleptocrats, plutocrats and monarchs that should be scared.

Thanks for posting about this. I've really enjoyed listening to this series this week, it was pretty successful in my opinion; Kai did a good job. As you said, it was informative even for someone who follows the region closely - reminded me that there's always more to learn!
I especially loved the Qanoon version of the Marketplace theme song. :)

Yep, I liked the Qanoun part, keep checking it here... http://marketplace.publicradio.org/middleeast/music/

That's called projection, foofy.

Are you kidding? I'm a proud Zionist and I'd like nothing more than the Dubaization of the Middle East - especially if a nice chunk of the wealth gets spread around to the man on the street, as opposed to corrupt politicians and crooked businessmen.

As an old Jew once said "When you got nothin' you got nothin' to lose." Expanded economic activity should eventually lead to stability, better education and a burgeoning Middle class that will clamor for responsible government. Radical elements with suicide fantasies will be kept in check and soon everyone will have a vested interest in stability and peace.

Nice article but you need some editing. "A very informative set of reports, even for someone who follows the region as closely as my self." is not a sentence. "And they donned the website with..." - did you mean adorned the Web site (Web is capitalized as it is a proper noun)?

I meant that in the most productive manner possible... I hope I didn't come off like a grammar Nazi.
