I was raised in this type of ignorant foolishness, although thankfully my family was not zealous about this particular aspect. I feel really sorry for everyone who watches this trash and feels more informed afterwards.
Anyway, the study of Islam is now required curriculum in American schools. Yes, there are a lot of mistakes, but there are people working to combat those mistakes as we speak. Tomorrow I'm giving some lectures where I live to classes of 9th (or 10th?) graders to help counteract this ridiculousness. It is a really wonderful thing to be a part of, and I would encourage any practicing Muslim with a little time to spare to consider signing up to learn how to give these lectures in your area. Other organizations that might request a speaker are churches, workplaces, conferences, etc. If you make up some cards, there will inevitably arise the opportunity to hand them out, especially if you wear hijab or something like that.
It's not proselytizing, it's simply information and education. Maybe we can stop the next PC or Roy before they get a chance to be stuck in their ways forever. The name of the program is Islamic Speakers Bureau, and you can find more information at ing.org.
Unfortunately, it's an interfaith project, so you will have to withhold your strong urges to behead with a sword those Jews and Christians you might have to come into contact with for the time being.
