Shlomo Sand is probably right on most of the history, though that doesn’t mean his preferred political conclusions follow from that history. As with any state, there have been both good and poor arguments made in favor it Israel; the arguments Sand debunks (ancient ties to the land) are a poor argument in favor of any nation — little more than blood-and-soil rhetoric (Which, unfortunately, Palestinian causes use as well).
That said, the (comparatively minor) issue of Zionism aside, the idea of a transnational Jewish peoplehood (coupled with the transition away from Judaism being a religion first and foremost) has been a great thing for the world, recent or not.
Oh, and why does it matter that Dylan’s name used to be Zimmerman? Some Jews are Zionists, some aren’t. Some non-Jews are Zionists, some aren’t. What the fuck does Dylan originally having a Jewish name have to do with anything? And why do you think he changed it?
