That is it. I am can’t take it anymore. When that sweet old woman, obviously educated by the likes of pipes and limbaugh, spewed the ugliest form of racism in her ‘accusation’ that Obama was (dare I say it) ‘an Arab’, I reached my limit. Then in an interview after the rally, when a CNN reporter corrected her she said “Yeah, but he’s still got Muslim in him….” , I went right over the edge. I am sick and tired of Arab and Muslim being whispered like the n word. I am climbing on to my soap box, and shouting “I HAVE HAD ENOUGH“.
I was almost ready to move to a beach in Mexico where people kinda look like me, and Arab isn’t a dirty word. What changed my mind? Well, other then the fact that I can’t afford to get to a beach in Mexico, I saw the out pouring of humanity (320 comments so far) in response to a Huffington Post article by my boss, James. Zogby. I’ve found my fighting spirit again. (yes qui qui, I work for the ‘liberal Arab American Intellectual’ of your obama buttons.)
So I say Vote, I don’t care for whom, just get your lazy a** to the poll and make sure that vial bigotry does not win. (Here comes the company line) Vote like your life depends on it. This hatred must be drowned out. We have to make our voices heard; otherwise this old lady will be speaking for us for the next 4 YEARS (Her and the 400 people that received her – insert curse word- kinko’s printed flier. Damn their convenience and Damn their 24 hr open door policy ).
Arab Americans must shout the loudest. We must join the chorus and sing out of tune. We must come out in such high numbers that to be pro-Arab means you win in Ohio, Michigan, Virginia, New Jersey, Florida. I want politician to have to answer to our community before they can hope to win, rather then hoping to win by using us as the “metaphorical mud to sling against their opponent”. So, I am here to ask everyone to help get out the Arab American vote. Remind everyone in your address book to go to the polls on Nov. 4th. Volunteer to phone bank at the Yalla Vote Virtual Phone Bank (a none partisan get-out-the-vote effort I might add). Help us call Arab Americans across the country and let them know the importance of their vote and their voice. We must not let the old woman’s not-so-innocent comment speak for us. It is time for us to say ” I am Arab, and I am here to stay
