[Robert Fisk on the Pat Kenny Show in Ireland while driving through the Bandon Roundabout in Cork]
PAT KENNY: Barack Obama has promised that he is to engage verbally—
ROBERT FISK: (laughs) — I’m choking slightly when you tell me what Barack Obama thinks.
PAT KENNY: No he has said that they will engage politically rather than militarily.
ROBERT FISK: Yeah, I’m sure he says that. Once he gets into office it’ll be the same old show. You know, I’ve been through so many times, “Oh well, we’re going to have the Labor government in power in Israel. It will be different to what it was under the Likud.” And it never is.
And, “We’re going to have the Democrats in power (under Clinton).” And it never was.
You know, we never get a new government in the sense that we never get a new Middle East.
At the end of the day, the U.S. government will go along with the Israeli government. I’m sorry to say. And I’m sorry for Israelis to say that because many Israelis realize how dangerous this is. But at the end of the day we are not going to have a change. And the situation is getting worse, and worse, and worse.
You know, I mean, I’ll tell you frankly, I’ve just had an opportunity to make a movie of my new book The Great War for Civilisation and I turned it down because they said they wanted to have hope in it. And I don’t think there’s any hope.
PAT KENNY: So this is really war without end.
ROBERT FISK: No, it doesn’t have to be without end. It doesn’t have to be. But we’re dying this way. And I’m sorry to see it happening. It’s a very sad situation.
