George Bisharat on Israel’s war crimes in Gaza in today’s WSJ — the legal definition. I guess Rupert Murdoch is on vacation…
Israel’s current assault on the Gaza Strip cannot be justified by self-defense. Rather, it involves serious violations of international law, including war crimes. Senior Israeli political and military leaders may bear personal liability for their offenses, and they could be prosecuted by an international tribunal, or by nations practicing universal jurisdiction over grave international crimes. Hamas fighters have also violated the laws of warfare, but their misdeeds do not justify Israel’s acts.
Also, not as prompt as KABOBfest, but Human Rights Watch documents Israel’s use of the internationally banned white phosphorous.

its actually not internationally banned. BUT having said this its use is illegal on a civilian population (as your link states) , and as gaza is one of the most densely populated places on earth, its use by the IDF is absolutely wrong. and frankly, disgusting. good article. i think it should be internationally banned.

Posted by Anonymous | January 10, 2009, 3:53 pmThis is important, so let me try to preempt some silliness. As was pointed out:
WP is not inherently illegal. It is sometimes used to illuminate an area kind of like a flare or a tracer round. This use is different from using it as an incendiary munition in a densely populated civilian area, which is probably illegal under international law.
Those who are screaming on the internet that WP is legal are either a) splitting semantic hairs to rationalize the atrocity or b) no aware of how WP is being used by the IDF in Gaza.
Posted by Anonymous | January 10, 2009, 3:57 pmHuman Rights Watch had to have a meeting — at the highest levels — on whether to report Israel’s recent human rights violations, for fear they’d piss off their Zionist donors.
Human Rights Watch is a dangerous joke.
