If these sacks were full of dollars and not flour, the US Senate would be first in line.
Any decent observer will ask: if Israel has been permitted to wreak this much havoc in Gaza by the world powers, at what point is the humanitarian disaster too big to let Israel carry-on?
When the Red Cross finds four severely emaciated children next to their mother’s corpse in Zeitoun?
When Israel’s military kills United Nations humanitarian workers in a clearly marked UN convoy?
When it impedes humanitarian work so excessively the United Nations and Red Cross have to halt relief efforts due to aid worker safety concerns?
When Israeli troops shell UN schools, killing more than 46 Palestinians who were seeking refuge inside?
When Israeli soldiers use Palestinian civilians as human shields to protect them from harm?
No, the best marker of Israel’s excessive brutality occurred this evening.
The US Senate passed a bill proclaiming support for Israel, and paying minor, and factually incorrect, lip service to the humanitarian disaster (calling it “acute” and implying Israel is helping significantly). Are these people mad? Could they mindlessly back a bigger rogue in the world right now? With such a rampant, murderous spree against a largely helpless refugee population, Israel truly cannot get any more villainous. And a green light from the American government cannot possibly be less heinous.
The Senate would shine the benches of the Titanic on its last voyage if AIPAC asked them. So much for being the chamber of cooler passions. They are overwhelmed by their passion for campaign collections. When AIPAC praised the bill, how many Senators drooled like Pavlovian dogs?
As a student of politics, I know this is reductive. But in light of the scale of international condemnation, the clearly documented humanitarian state of Gaza, and the growing disgust many Americans have, what else explains this insanity?
The answer may be here. Bill co-sponsor and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican claimed Israel is “responding exactly the same way we would.” And that is true — we saw the American genocide in Iraq before our eyes — which the American Senate backed as well, and to nothing but disastrous effects. So I can’t be surprised they they would again support a careless adventure in the Middle East, one that is only sure to achieve no goals and leave innocent bodies behind.
Maybe they are sadists who just like to see people get blown up, kids starving next to their mother’s corpse, and babies with bullet holes in their stomachs? Or maybe they create powerful rationalization so they can sleep at night, by saying Hamas is solely to blame.
The US Senate has demonstrated beyond a doubt a shocking moral bankruptcy time and time again, and for that, the distinguished chamber is not worth paying attention to. It clearly has a common wisdom when it comes to the region, and that learned consensus is that Arab lives are just barely above worthless. This does not decrease my view of them as two-bit panderers, at all. Rather, I see them as moral scoundrels who treat war and politics as game to be played where the stakes for them are careers, ranks, and press, but the cost includes millions of lives they could care less about.
One can only hope for justice, but you won’t find it in these here United States with this rotten, myopic, stunningly anti-worldly elite.

Posted by Anonymous | January 8, 2009, 4:41 pmThe simple fact is that our Congress is a pack of self-serving whores, cowards and scumbags who have been bribed, threatened and coerced into compliance with the Israel lobby’s every whim. There is simply no way an independent governing body composed of so many diverse individuals could consistently march in lockstep (or is is goosestep?) with any constituency’s demands were this not the case. This is particularly true when you consider the majority of the American public feels the US should not take sides in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
At some point, we need to purge the entire US government of these craven, amoral scumbags and start from scratch. If people in this country had any sense, merely being associated in any way with AIPAC would be as fatal to an American political career as getting caught raping a dead child on video.
