Lupe Fiasco: “Free Gaza”
Being the Lupe Fiasco fan that I am, I don’t know how I didn’t catch this sooner. Unfortunately, I can’t really make it what he’s saying (lots of screaming girls, of course), but his shirt says it all:

For those of you unfamiliar with Lupe, he’s a Chicago-born Muslim rapper whose song “Daydreamin’” (with Jill Scott) won a Grammy in 2008. He’s also known for his remake of Kanye West’s “Jesus Walks” entitled “Mohammed Walks.”
I know, I always found that weird, because Kanye’s a Muslim too.
Kanye West is not a Muslim. Lupe is a Muslim.

If you look at Jewish or pro-Israel blogs, they are abuzz in Israeli election coverage, coalition building, policy debate, diaspora issues.
You need to be a credible voice in times of peace, not just a knee jerk pit bill in times of war.

Thanks for the tip. I don’t pay attention to music and stuff usually. It is pretty weird to hear a young girl screaming “Allahu akbar” at a concert. It’s kind of… nice. I notice that where I live now, religious phrases are used for everyday occurrences. I hear “Sulli ala nabi” a lot from people in the streets. I am in Egypt by the way.

Yasser is right, Rhymefest (who is also Muslim) ghost co-wrote “Jesus Walks.” And interesting enough, if you listen to the words of the song, it relates stronger to messages of faith in Islam, and “Mohammad Walks” (as I concur with Yasser) is a cheap sleight-of the hand, rip-off. Actually, I am not that impressed by Lupe to begin with, and consider his self-marketing as the poster-boy for Sunni Islam in hip hop as uber-gimmicky.

Maytha, i disagree boo. Lupe’s Muhammed walks sucked, but it is not a “rip off”. Lupe is affiliated with Kanye/Rhymefest, etc. and it’s normal for rappers to build off of and do freestyles over others’ beats and ideas. Kanye did it/does it too…very normal and appropriate.
I also don’t think Lupe’s Muslimness is a gimic…there’s no angle, it’s not a good thing to be a real Sunni Muslim in the entertainment business, it’s a liability. I don’t think there is any basis to call into question the sincerety of his faith or the reason he is so vocal about it.

I agree that “Muhammad Walks” sounds like a rip-off (even though I also agree that it sort of isn’t, given how common that styling is), but I don’t think I agree that “Jesus Walks” relates any more to Islam than it does to root Christianity or religious folks in general.
I like Lupe a lot as a rapper, period – I did before it ever occurred to me that he was Muslim, but yeah, now that I’ve seen him more in the public eye, the heavy self-marketing has gotten a bit annoying. I guess that’s why I like Mos so much (and there ya’all were, thinking it was just cause I’m a white girl
