The Qur’an: Always Applicable?

Popular Moroccan weekly TelQuel is apparently at it again (and by “it” I mean controversy). The cover story on the issue set for release tomorrow is entitled “Le Coran: Est-il vraiment applicable ‘en tout temps et en tout lieu?’” (or “The Qur’an: is it really applicable ‘at all times and in all places?’”)

TelQuel (which means “as is”) has come under fire numerous times in recent years for its controversial pieces. In 2005, Mohamed Bouhcini was targeted after acting as a guide for journalist Chadwane Bensalmia on a trip to the Rif mountains to research a story on drug trafficking. And publisher of TelQuel and it sister magazine Nichane (the only magazine published in Moroccan dialect) Ahmed Benchemsi was charged in 2007 for “failing to show due respect to the king” following an article that questioned the electoral process. And Nichane was nearly destroyed by a lawsuit later that year after editor Driss Ksikes and journalist Sana El-Aji produced an article focusing on Moroccan “street jokes,” including some which dealt with Islam and the king.

The latest article features Islamic scholars “rethinking the verses of discord” and will specifically question jihad, polygamy, and heritage.

There’s no telling what the reaction to the article might be; although Islam, the monarchy, and the Western Sahara are all taboo subjects for the press in Morocco, articles dealing with Islam tend to take the lightest hit.

  1. tel quel means “as it is” not “as is”. what is the point of this idiotic post? the author merely translates the cover headline and gives cursory information about the magazine. at least discuss the content of the article…or wait until the issue is published tomorrow, so we can all read it. telquel is the morocco’s best-run and consistently provocative francophone weekly. unfortunately this fluffy post doesn’t do it justice.

  2. How about the fact that the posted article just informed thousands of people that a magazine like Telquel exists and that such an article is going to be printed in one of its issues. I think thats a pretty big deal.

Keep up the good work Kabobers.

  3. I think thats a pretty big deal.

I agree. But it would be a bigger deal if it was published in Saudi Arabia, or in any other Arab country in the non-North African middle-east, in my opinion. Still, it’s a bid deal. As you said :)

  4. Anonymous, the point is that no one has mentioned it online yet except Daily Maghreb. I was trying to get the news out; I will likely do a follow-up post when the article becomes available online.

  6. PROTEST
Secular in the dominant Arabic discourse translate to (having scientific thinking): it invite rejection, road to Hell & some how Kafer
Kamu & Fanon inspire the Iranian Islamic Revolution through Ali Shariti (The real great Martyr), another Martyr "I don't recall his name now" wrote a research in (The Hijab) which end up a CHOICE
Khomini may be the last Islamic scholar who end his research in theological matters with (and God knows), before the Islamic discourse fall deep in the (FATWA CIRCUS), his Fatwa in the Indian-British "Salman Rushdi" is pure political (cut the west cultural influence from the roots), as any successful politician he turn his back to his allies, don't bother inforce Hijab & sack the elected president Bany Sader (the goal of the political : seizing power; not intellectual convenient)
This had nothing to do with the Arab world?
At the end of the Cold War every spot in the world move toward Globalism & Economic Reform with what they had: the Arab respond wasn't bad, they unite in three Economical blocks:
    1)The traditional Gulf states conference
2)The Eastern Arab state (Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Yemen & Oman)
    3)The Western ones(Libya, Tunisa,Algerea,Morocco & Moritania)
Also they open the political system in many states
    cut
1)The Arabs applause the Iranian Victory (the headlines)
2)In the Friday : slam mother-day, tree-day & every day in the year, except few days?
3)in a full hall the 55 years old 5th grader taxi driver lecturing us about a tooth brush called "Swak" for an hour, when I ask why he refuse to debate "social X", he answer:why I give publicity (it's PUBLICITY) watch this guy he had a future!..later a gigantic Islamic center will be build & poor people take their kids out of public school & pay for the center , he will be the director! (he will had second marriage with 23 years teacher & a third: it's allowed), he will be elected for the Parliament with a large margin!!
4)Hello Intellectuals: Hunington will publish the "Clash of Civilization" & the Arabs are so pleased he consider Islam a threat!
5)Muneer Shafeek was the first to ride the wave with (Islam in the battle of civilization), although Ghaleb Halseh crush his argument in (Ignorance in the battle of civilization): Shafeek book become not only the best seller; but a Manafisto of the political Islam; remember the 5th grader (it's Publicity)
6)When Iraq (occupy/return) Kuwait the political Islam was at the peak of Publicity : the top leaders of this movement gather in Amman-Jordan (Turabi, Al-Ahmar, Madani, Ghnoshi …you name him; he was there),I am the one who book their Flight to Tehran-Iran; they came with this idea to persuade Iran to open a new page & join Iraq in a historical stand off with the West, Iran simply welcome them & give them a polite NO
7)Yadi, yadi, yada the Arab regimes accept their little peace of the cake (just stay in power; what ever it take)
8)Political Islam fully contained either In or Out in the current system & inter as any fallen movement a destruction faze from (living under tyrant more merciful than anarchy)to (rule the poor people whom don't support you out of Islam to justify massacring them) & any component in between in a clash of destruction that never left the surface
The Quraan invite you to challenge & to continuance (observation & orientation), (deciding & acting)
Al-Ma3ree & Al-Tawhedi challenge the script & by doing that they enrich the Islamic civilization

  7. Complete silence and complicity by Kabob for Hamas crimes. I overheard Will say, referring to the Gazans, “Resistance forever. And the people? Let them eat dirt”.

  8. Really Anonymous? Could you be any more pathetic in your attempt to extort response? If you’re method of discussion is to act like a political turd, you’re doing quite well.

  10. I believe that the drinking water jets are an ideal way to help battle gum sickness. I’ve receding gums and my dentist tells me that it is quite important to floss daily, twice each day if possible. So I do and it does help tremendously in keeping my teeth from getting inflamed. The jets will also flush out foods and bacteria among the teeth and around the gum line. It could possibly get down among the gums and tooth also, to assist obvious out everything inside the tooth pocket, which is the purpose gums get inflamed. So yes, I would say it’s an ideal way to keep your gums healthy. I’d verify with your dentist for their recommendations for which one to obtain. I have a extremely old 1, and am seeking to upgrade myself.
