10 Ways to Tell That You Are in the Emirates…

1. Two men with ambiguous sexual preferences, one with his arm around the other’s waist, and the partner with his arm over his friend’s shoulder hit on you.

2. A spa for cars is all the rage.
3. On a plane flight from the states to Dubai, the overweight American hick with an stretched to capacity Harley Davidson shirt from the 1980s who probably eats a White Castle Casserole with deep-fried chicken skin shavings on top everyday for lunch seated next to you-works for Halliburton:
“So why did you live in Oman for 15 years?
“Oh, I work in oil…for Halliburton. Have you heard of it?”
“Sure I have. You guys are one of the most famous financial colonizing agents in the Middle East!”

4. Following suit with a stereotype that speaks to a majority of ME countries bipolar behavior, a certain Israeli-friendly chain, that itself failed in efforts to set up franchises in Israel, is a “big time”* hit in the Khaleej.
5. Majlas-es, located on the same plot of a land as a house, are bigger than a middle class house in the US.
6. You quickly learn a popular mathematical formula:
(clown + whore) x (plastic Mattel-like accessories meant for Barbie and Hello Kitty enhusiasts) + the shavings of a horse mane for fake eyelashes=
The face of an abaya-wearing Khaleej woman.
7. You notice that not the most traditionally expensive cars, but the ones with the lowest license plate number, are displayed in the valet area of hotels.
8. You are hardly surprised by the amusement park long lines at gas stations stalls. Why? Because the concept of self-service has yet to reach the ears of the “locals.”
9. Responding to the epidemic-scale increase in its population, the city’s premiere Diabetes clinic has its own separate building that is close to the size of an adjacent hospital.
10. You find that one of the leading causes of death is not something medical, but behavioral: Traffic accidents caused by reckless driving.
And as wild card entries to the list (can’t ruin the iconic “10″ part of a top ten list):
11. Random websites and internet chat tools like Flickr and Skype are blocked.
12. You realize the hottest commodity is not a limited edition Ferrari with a low license plate, but something more prized: an educated white man.**
*A popular phrase loved by Arabic-speaking boaters across the Arab dunya. Just add “my friend” and “bullshit” (or “bs”) to the lexical mix, and you got yourself all the words you need to know to hold a business conversation in Arabish

**Expect a post on this last observation soon

  1. The dominant Arabic discourse is sharply polarized : your 12 observations will not be received as a criticism (accepted , oriented & think-ed : to decide & act for good) ; but as an attack that require "defense" which in general not related to the subject although it's effective & efficient (labeling is a proved formula : if you escape "Zionist" don't consider your self lucky , next "scientific" which translate "secular" then understood "a person with different way of thinking than our "tribal" believe, ….consider your self lucky if you are labeled as a "jealous" look & behave like us person), (to name a few "Ignorance" is another one : if the "clergy" rule it "allowed" what's your problem …and so on in the Arabic/Islamic global-ism crux) Don't cross the river twice ; but since I cross it several times I became a "wise" loser : I detect for you in UAE a sign of a "quit" life in this "loud" death , a try to save the consciousness of the "silent" majority from the deadly polarization ” target=”_blank”>http://www.youtube.com/user/alaantube
