Sketching Israeli Apartheid

A new four page comic shows the basic commonalities between South African and Israeli apartheid systems — the discriminatory control, collective punishment and denial of rights that privileges one group of people over another.

As reported by The Arabist, Ethan Heitner, a comic artist, drew inspiration from Desmond Tutu and Ian Urbina’s classic 2002 article “Against Israeli Apartheid”, as many activists have.

Specifically, he illustrated these lines from the article:

Yesterday’s South African township dwellers can tell you about today’s life in the Occupied Territories. To travel only blocks in his own homeland, a grandfather waits on the whim of a teenage soldier. More than an emergency is needed to get to a hospital; less than a crime earns a trip to jail. The lucky ones have a permit to leave their squalor to work in Israel’s cities, but their luck runs out when security closes all checkpoints, paralyzing an entire people. The indignities, dependence and anger are all too familiar.

  2. More great material for boycott activists. Kabobfest is loaded with great material for activists who demand action against Israel. Just one problem: no actual activists demanding any actual action against Israel! But keep the good material coming. Maybe it will shame someone, somewhere, into demanding boycott against Israel.

  3. When you're attracting people with swastikas in their names, you might want to check your material. I'm just saying…

  4. You are welcome to explain why Israel is not a Nazi occupier. I happen to believe it is one, hence the spelling. Better to spend your time boycotting Israel than defending it.

  5. David, People is plural. Plus, I know this may be hard to understand, but ever heard of an agent provocateur? Will

  6. Fascinating. Instead of an acknowledgement of how disgusting the handle is, I get 2 responses supporting it. I suppose that that says everything one needs to know. Nietzsche was right, then. He just used the wrong qualifier.

  7. An "agent provacateur" is someone who tries to get you to commit crimes, so that you can be arrested and eliminated from activism. Someone who tries to get you to demand boycott, against an apartheid state, is acting like all anti-apartheid activists used to act. You are SUPPOSED to condemn Israel for its racism, for its Naziism, and demand that it be boycotted. But if calling Israel a "Nazi state" becomes a crime– at that point, Will would be right. If demanding divestment and boycott against Israel becomes a crime– at that point, Will would be right. At that point, then Palestinian activism would have to be confined to just making fun of Zionists, all in the spirit of good fun (not calling them Nazis, and not demanding boycott).

  8. Well, I know it is very comfy talking about HOT girls on Kebobfest; however, we have the little problem of a fascist stats (Israel/US) murdering at will all over the Middle East. Is it me or the number of fascist occupations are in the rise the in Middle East? —————– I invite you to come to Michigan Student Assembly tonight (Wed 13 May 2009, 3rd floor of the Michigan Union at 6:00 PM) and take a stand against Isreal. Demand serious action against the fascist State of Israel. Boycott movement is growing all over the world. Be a serious part of the Boycott Israel movement. Come to Michigan Student Assembly tonight (Wed 13 May 2009, 3rd floor of the Michigan Union at 6:00 PM,) and demand boycott of Israel at all U of M campuses.
