“Eat my d*ick”: the Lebanese version of “yes we can.”

mcassel_0541Matthew Cassel reports from Lebanon:

“Eat my d*ck”: that’s what this guy’s shirt says. This was taken at the celebrations by supporters of the Lebanese Forces and Phalangists at Sassine Square in Beirut’s Ashrafiyeh neighborhood in the early hours of June 8. Ashrifiyeh was supposed to be a tight race, but the “March 14″ alliance’s Christian groups ended up sweeping all five seats.

His shirt was by no means one of the worst things being said to/about the opposition parties and their leaders tonight. Most of the chants were directed towards Hizballah head Hassan Nasrallah (“kuss uchtak nasrallah”) and Free Patriotic Movement head Michel Aoun.

For more info, check out Robert Fisk’s analysis [Will].

  3. It's hardly no better or worse than what rowdy March 8 supporters say to each other, it's disengenious to suggest that only one side has rowdy supporters. March 8 and March 14 are both filled with parochial, young, rowdy nationalists who'd love to wipe each other eat. At leat it was "eat my dick" and not "I'll close down the airport" _ less vulgar, but far more serious, no?

  8. Note how he’s not threatening the March 8th folks with violence; he’s simply telling them to go fuck themselves.

Compare that to how the SSNP attacked Christopher Hitchens.

The March 8th crowd doesn’t deserve civility; they aren’t allowing themselves to function as members of a civilized society. There’s no reason anyone should grant civility to them.
