Social Unrest in Syria: All Talk?

Syrian booty call lingerie.

A Guest Post by Ramification.

In a very sudden and drastic change, the Syrian people from all walks of life have collectively agreed to strike today demanding their FREEDOM!

It is clear, the people can’t take it anymore, the abuse of their basic human rights can’t go on any longer.

The demands are clear and the activists fully mobilized: Either lower the per-minute rates on prepaid cell phones or we’ll talk on the phone way less. Look out!

Alright people, so the strike isn’t exactly about the most obvious problem in Syria’s democracy (or lack thereof) but about the abuse of people’s right to pay less for their talking minutes (or as its known in the region ta2 7anak).

Yours truly, Ramification, is from the land called Syria which is only called Syria because some French jackass some 60 odd years ago met with an English politician (who also happened to be a jackass) and decided to use a nice convenient ruler that just happened to be there to draw up the lines of the middle east, but I digress.

Growing up hearing stories about communist party members marching in the streets of Damascus demanding change to REAL problems and then reading that my people decided to strike because they JUST can’t take having to pay so much for minutes is saddening to say the least. What happened to struggles for progress?

Here is a question: what is the point of cheaper rates if half of what is on your mind you are too scared to say on the phone?

Then again, that does explain why the rates are so expensive. They gotta pay those people wiretapping your phone calls somehow!

Being the optimist that I am, I can’t help but see the silver lining. If people are slowly re-realizing their collective power as a group then maybe they can eventually direct it towards real democratic change and not just cheaper phone calls.

The Cell Phone revolution?
