Ammou Balfour, we salute you . . . Not!

By Los

Anyone remember that old show “حدث في مثل هذا اليوم” (It happened on a day like this) that aired back in the 70’s and whose two-minute re-runs you’d see at random moments on Arabic T.V.? Well, this isn’t that program.

1917 Balfour DeclarationFor those of us (including myself) who forgot our history, let us not forget that today marks the start of year ninety two since a world power gave the “authorized” consent for a foreign, alien, non-indigenous and non-native people to formally come to Palestine for the sole purpose of establishing their official “national home.”

It’s great knowing that the past ninety two years have failed to produce the document’s stipulated aspirations; the real tragedy however, comes when we realize that everything imaginable has been done to “prejudice the civil and religious rights” of the native and already “existing . . . communities in Palestine.”

At a time when Israel wants to utterly erase the Nakba from the pages of history, I invoke the words of yet another famous Brit: Rudyard Kipling. Let us remember the real history of Palestine and how this 123 word document actually ended up playing out . . . “Lest we forget—lest we forget!”
