The “News” in “Fox News” is so misleading it is ridiculous. It is purely false advertising. I know this is an old subject given that inanity has been their formula for years.
But a recent clip really gets to me: How is Bill O’Reilly’s fake and cutesy feud with Sesame Street even anything close to newsworthy? The most offensive thing is O’Reilly’s smugness in this video.
This is manipulative in other ways. Viewers have to put up with the false modesty of O’Reilly-sanctioned self-deprecatory humor. Here he allows on air a Muppet caricature of himself, which he permits in his tough guy stance and uses to take pot shots at personal adversary, Barney Frank, which also highlights O’Reilly’s own relevance.
His own visibility and status — the requisite for Muppet satire — becomes the news he wishes to show. Entertainment news has become so self-referential and ironic. “Laugh with me as I laugh at myself because we all know I’m the jerk with a heart and not an off-putting heartless jerk who despises other countries and opposes reforms that actually would help the worst off.” It traps viewers in the constructed drama and ego-maniacal twists and turns of the quasi-personality cult known as the celebrity journalist.
What seems like cute and innocent banter, is really quite sociopathic. He shows almost no regard for those long victimized by his ways and views, which are playfully mocked by “Spill O’Reilly.” We are supposed to laugh with O’Reilly about his own sociopathy as a way of being charmed out of recognizing it.
But those who know better recall his tyrannical intolerance for different opinions and bullying fabrication of the facts, as with his barbaric interview of Jeremy Glick:
What kind of TV professional tells a guest to say, “shut up”? And who invites a guest only to do all the talking? What a joke of a “journalist”!
I wonder if O’Reilly threatened to tear Spill O’Reilly to pieces.
I can’t blame Sesame Street for playing to O’Reilly’s ego by bigging up his tough guy image. O’Reilly’s party has been a huge opponent of publicly-funded programming. With Sesame Street’s reference to “Pox News,” the conservatives who already have a chip on their shoulder against PBS have found something else to get pissed about.

Posted by That one | November 26, 2009, 1:58 amYou really shouldn't celebrate the dumbing down of our culture. It's possible to be a conservative without drooling over Bill O'Reilly's juvenile screamfest of a show, you realize.
Posted by Cig. | November 30, 2009, 2:04 amPBS is a very left-leaning network. They have some good shows, I like the FRONTLINE show, but you can tell their programs have a liberal perspective. PBS receives public funds, so the question is why should television meant for everyone have just the leftist political bearing?
And its obvious that someone at Sesame Street just through in a jab at FOX News, because they are liberal.
As for Jeremy Glick: WATCH THIS
