Censor Those Boobs Too?

Few weeks ago popular Kathy Perry appearance on Sesame Street was censored due to her prominent breasts. Obviously this was very controversial and funny at the same time. But this week, the Arab viewers had to put up with a new music video made for children, very cute ones indeed.

A lead female singer Layal makes a music video for kids and if you guessed her  boobs are all over this music video, you are right. I might not have noticed those if it were not for the Kathy Perry gaffe. But seriously, not sure what to make of it, I mean REALLY?

Dare I to say that Arabs are a bit more liberal than Americans when it comes to children. Maybe there are more freedoms in the Arab world than in the land of Uncle Sam (unlikely). I have seen many sketchy and racy music videos come from Arabia, but this one is geared toward children, not older fat and balding men.

Maybe that’s what passes for family entertainment, the kids get the song and the grown up can stare at something…..Or it might be that Layal, the singer is an overgrown child. Why cannot a busty girl entertain a bunch of children?

I am not sure who should be more ashamed the Arabs or the Americans, who is right and who is more wrong. But I know both Kathy and Lyal have nothing to be ashamed of.

  2. So, because there are children in the video this is a song for kids? At least Katy Perry's lips are not buffed as the Arab singer. A Jordanian Child Psychiatrist who works in the US told me raising a child in the Arab world is more dangerous than in the US. There are no rating when it comes to TV programs. Children there watch everything on TV regardless if its proper for kids or not.
It seems our idea of family entertainment is different; it does not mean PG it just means everyone gets to enjoy something :)

  3. As an American living in an Arab country, I am ashamed of both. Makes me wonder what people in children's programming are thinking?

I'm with Jaraad, I believe the Arab world is a more dangerous place to raise a child. Especially girls, as they see all this junk on TV, belly dance at weddings from the age of 3, then are expected to be chaste virgins or lose their family's honor. Lots of mixed messages.

    • I'm with you on the mixed messages, but don't think that's unique to Arab culture (more extreme, maybe, in certain countries, and I suppose if you'd said "the Gulf" I might have agreed with you). Overall though, I think you're underestimating the pervasiveness of "virginity" culture in the US.

  6. I agree with you totally about context. In this case, going by the picture it really is just a pair of tits in a dress. She doesn't have them in a bikini with tassels while dancing around a pole with men shouting obscenities and waving notes around. Kids have no reason to look at a woman in a normal looking dress and think "Is that cleavage? Must objectify women!". Some of the breast-feeding ones might just be thinking "I am hungry." This can of course change when we criminalize those two mounds of female flesh.

  7. Just watch Mexican television for lessons in making trash. Somehow this seems tame. Still, better to turn the "boob tube" off and just get a life. There is a life out there waiting to be lived… not simply watched.
