This particular dad seemed annoyed, fine. But in the first Western kaffiyeh craze (NYC & The Bay Area/late 70s + early 80s), there were lots of lefty Jews rocking one. It wasn't a general badge of hippy cred, as Freemman wrongly states, but a statement, however symbolic, of solidarity with Palestine. The idea that such solidarity is somehow an inherent contradiction for Jews is bordering on the notion that anti-zionist (or even liberal zionist) Jews must be confused self-haters.
