The United State of Algeria

US or Algeria in today’s game? I can’t decide…and honestly, I did not even know the decision was going to be this hard nor that the feeling would be so torn.
So go Algeria, or US, if I figure that out by the time of the game I may enjoy the game more… We’ll see, they can’t both advance. May be this is how it is when you make a good life in a country the oppresses your people… How do Latinos do it?

Guest Post: Let’s Keep Our Eyes on the Ball

It seems there’s so much in common between Algeria and Egypt: they’re both Arab, predominantly Muslim countries; they both have a history of colonization and, as we’ve witnessed over this past month, they’re both extremely passionate about their football. In fact, after a much heated contest and violent vitriol between the two sides, they are now tied at the top of their World Cup qualifying group with the same points, wins, losses, draws, goals scored and conceded.

Beyond Mini-Skirts and Veils

President Sarkozy’s recent declarations against the burqa have fallen out of the news headlines but his words are still ringing loudly within and outside Western Muslim communities. Opinion pieces and letters continue to flood international and local papers, tugging back and forth. While such debates may be painful and trivial to read and listen to by many, they must be welcomed as they both bring into light a far greater issue than any all-encompassing piece of fabric.

On Pirates and Pacification

As the US military’s disastrous planning for their occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan has been reveled many people have tried to figure out where to look for inspiration. Vietnam? Not so much. Since the US was “never a colonial power” strategists started looking at other colonial histories. Out of this effort has come the lionization [...]

Bouteflika Re-elects Himself, Gets Love Letter from Al-Assad

Awww, isn’t that sweet? Assad congratulating Bouteflika on re-electing himself! That ought to mean a lot coming from someone who managed to pull off 97% in his re-election (whereas Boute only managed 90.24%). Congrats, Bouteflika! (Tarboush Tip: SANA)

No Smoking

I don’t like cigarettes… I’m happy that I don’t have to worry about dealing with them anymore in restaurants and bars. Ludicrous lawsuits notwithstanding, I don’t see that happening anytime soon in the Arab world where people seem to smoke everywhere. But three Algerians have been locked up since September 21 for smoking on the street during [...]

Arab Olympics

While Mauritania continues to win the “Arab Olympics“, the athletes compete in China.  Congrats to Algerian Soraya Haddad for winning the first medal for an Arab country in 2008.  Haddad tied for bronze in women’s Judo.  Do you think Qaddafi will try to recruit her to be a body guard now?
