When my college advisor told me about the Washington Seminar, I was so excited just thinking about having an internship in Washington DC, where the political sausage is made. Little did I know, my college campus had few internships that I qualified for. It wasn’t likely that I would be offered an internship at one of the many conservative think tanks in the DC area. Besides, what a member of Congress would do with a Palestinian student is beyond me!
Sacha Baron Cohen loves to mock all things Arab and Muslim. All three of his most popular movies have gone out of their way to vilify Arabs and Muslims. Now, as brave men and women in the Arab world courageously and resiliently face down the despots that have beaten and killed them, Baron Cohen portrays a dictator.
Look, aside from the World Cup, we Arabs really only enjoy two other things with equal pleasure: Fashion and Music. Take a look back at the last Arab wedding you’ve been to, remember Uncle Sammy dressed in a plaid powder-blue suit and dancing to Nancy Ajram with the ferocity that makes Mick Jagger look like a white boy at a Zulu coming-of-age ceremony.
Upon our arrival to the Gaza Strip in the summer of 1991, I began missing all the things I took for granted; which included air conditioning and my favorite show Voltron. After a few months in Gaza, and having to adjust to life there, my gazillion cousins made life a lot more fun. Their sudden presence in my life combined with their stories made the difference. My first Ramadan in Gaza began on March 5th, 1992.
While we were guests of that country, Ramadan was the one time when we felt just like the local people. It was a wonderful time – a feeling of unity was over the country and everyone had plenty to eat and was able enjoy the special season. I remember on some evenings my family would skip Iftar to go to the mosque where they served an extravagant meal after the sunset prayer.
Dr. Mansour Mostafa, Gaza’s top plastic surgeon, “If you think about it, it makes perfect sense,” “Israel’s siege is making people age quicker, and with that comes more wrinkles.“ According to several other surgeons interviewed for this this report, Gaza is becoming increasingly more vain and has turned into a chic urban center where pop stars are the trend setters.
Despite the challenges (ha), I still managed to enjoy some quality television time. We don’t have TV at home, so it was a brave new world of shows and commercials for me. The best Arab channels are MBC 2 and MBC 4. I watched Emma (the 1996 version) on MBC 2 one of the nights I was at the hotel, along with bits and pieces of other movies and shows. It’s been a while since I’ve watched Arab TV for any length of time, and I found myself learning some things.
You can hate the game, but not the player. While the majority of Arabs support the Palestinian cause and want to see it resolved, there are those Arabs who do not have warm feelings toward Palestinians. Despite this, along with the Arabic language, the Palestinian cause unites most people of Arab descent. Nevertheless, there are groups of Arabs that will forever remain wary of Palestinians
The song is titled El Helm, “the dream” and that’s just what most boys know Sandy for, the girl of their Egyptian dreams. The girls of Paris–the world’s fashion hub got nothing on Sandy, she is unafraid to show a lot more skin than many are willing to tolerate. She has been doing that non stop in Arabia ever since she emerged three years ago. Sandy might be on a secret mission to bring down the recent French ban on niqab. Her sexy legs campaign might be an effort to give the French government the middle finger by telling them your niqab ban won’t be shutting this Egyptian girl down.
Taking on serious issues in Egypt was never popular with the elite in power. There is also one more reason indie bands are having the time of their lives in post Mubarak Egypt. Such bands can take risks, they do not have to worry about sales as much as singers of the like loser Tamer Hosny.
